TVS Diodes Explained
TVS diode (Transient Voltage Suppressor, Transient Voltage Suppressor Diode) is a highly efficient circuit protection device specially designed to eliminate the effects of sudden or transient overvoltage on sensitive semiconductors and circuits.
Working principle
TVS diodes are made using semiconductor technology and have the characteristics of a single PN junction or the integration of multiple PN junctions. Under normal voltage conditions, the TVS appears in an open circuit state, but there is a small amount of leakage current. When the voltage exceeds a certain level, the TVS junction avalanches and shunts the overvoltage away from the protected circuit. After the overvoltage disappears, TVS automatically resets.
Characteristic parameters
Reverse operating voltage (VWM): TVS does not work at this operating voltage, and the current flowing through it should be less than or equal to its maximum reverse leakage current ID.
Minimum breakdown voltage (VBR): At 25℃, TVS will not avalanche below this voltage.
Maximum clamping voltage (VC) and maximum peak pulse current (IPP): reflect the surge suppression capability of TVS.
Junction Capacitance (C): Determined by the TVS avalanche junction cross-section, measured at a specific 1MHz frequency, and proportional to the current carrying capacity of the TVS.
TVS diode can be divided into one-way and two-way. One-way TVS diode is mainly used in DC power supply circuits, and two-way TVS diode is used in circuits with alternating voltage. They are widely used in various fields such as computer systems, communication equipment, AC/DC power supplies, automobiles, and household appliances. They can effectively protect sensitive components in the circuit and ensure the normal operation of the equipment.
