Topdiode the DPAK (TO-252) package follows the JEDEC standard and is configured for surface mount applications. The DPAK package is suitable for medium power applications designed for low on-resistance and high-speed switching MOSFETs such as motor drivers, power supply circuits, DC-DC converters, consumer and automotive products. The DPAK also have popular 3-lead variant also known as DPAK, along with 2 less commonly used 5-lead variants. In the “DPAK” range there is also the larger TO-263 (D2PAK) and TO-268 (D3PAK) offering higher power dissipation ratings.

DPAK (TO-252)

All TO-252 packages have a pitch of 1.27mm (50mill). TO-252’s are quite easy to hand-solder, although the large tab can make things difficult because of it’s heatsinking capabilities.

 

  • TO-220: The through-hole package that the TO-252-3 was designed to replace (not pin compatible!).
  • TO-263 (D2PAK): The TO-263 (D2PAK) is the next step up in power dissipation from the TO-252-3 package.
  • TO-268 (D3PAK): The TO-268 (D3PAK) is the next step up in power dissipation from the TO-263 (D2PAK) package.

The TO-252-3 is the 3-lead variant in the TO-252 family, most commonly known by the synonym DPACK.

TO-252-5-P1

The TO-252-5 is the 5-lead variant in the TO-252 family with a square a shorter tab than the TO-252-5-P2. It is not as common as the 3-lead variant. Most of the time the middle lead (3rd lead) is cut short in this variant, as it’s electrically connected to the tab.

The TO-252-5-P2 is a 5-lead variant of the TO-252 package with a rounded and longer tab than the TO-252-5-P17. If there is no suffix listed on a TO-252-5 package (e.g. no mention of P1 or P2), it will likely be this variant.

Q1: What is the difference between DPAK and DPAK 2?

Answer: The D2PAK is bigger than the DPAK, and comes in several versions with different terminal counts. The D2PAK, which has a flat heat sink at the back, is basically the surface-mount equivalent of the TO-220 through-hole package and is therefore sometimes referred to as ‘SMD-220’. The D2PAK is also known as ‘TO-263

 

Q2: What is the difference between TO-252 and to 263?

Answer: Beyond using the same mounting style (surface mounting), they also have the pins bent against the surface of the Printed Circuit Board (PCB). The difference between the TO252 and TO236 semiconductor packages is the size. While the TO252 is smaller, the TO263 is bigger

 

Q3: What is the difference between TO-220 and D2PAK?

Answer: TO-220 and TO-262 (D2PAK) are very similar packages. In fact, you can hand form a D2PAK from a TO-220 by cutting off the clip at the end, and bending the leads. The only difference is TO-220 can be bolted down because of the extended tab, where as D2PAK is a surface mount device

 

Q4: What is the difference between D2PAK and D3PAK?

Answer: The Decawatt Package 3 , or D3PAK , is a bigger version of the D2PAK package. Just like the D2PAK (and the DPAK, the D2PAK’s predecessor), the D3PAK is a surface-mount plastic-molded package intended for high-power discrete devices. The D3PAK is also known by other names such as ‘TO-268’ and ‘Discrete Package 3’
